Girls Just Want to Have Fun -- with an Indie Makeover

[Edit: Apparently, Starfucker changed their name to "PYRAMIDDD" just this past October. Hmm.]

Happy Halloween all!

I'm posting another song by PYRAMIDDD, one of my favorite indie bands. Lately, I've been listening to a Cyndi Lauper CD a friend gave me; the song "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" inevitably came up.

PYRAMIDDD covered the song, which I am posting here for you all. It's quite quirky (and perky). They did a good job!

Here's a link to Cyndi Lauper's original version of the song.

PYRAMIDDD/Starfucker - Girls Just Want to Have Fun

And an interesting find--The Killers covered the song as well (huh?!).

(By the way, Miley Cyrus covered the song too, apparently. This would be my Halloween song to go with the theme, if you get my drift.)

The Swimmers - A Hundred Hearts

This song doesn't relate to Halloween, but it's one that I've really enjoyed ever since I heard it. Found out about this song through the awesome TV music channel that I have, and I've watched this video clip on YouTube more than 30 times ever since I discovered it. Wish there was an actual music video, but this band seems to be so indie that there weren't even lyrics available for it.

Enjoy!

Pink Floyd - Goodbye Blue Sky

An oldie, but goodie.

I first saw this on a late night slot of PBS in Denver when I knew only a few words of English. For me, it was one of those childhood things that you don't understand, and yet vividly remember. Although the lyrics didn't stick well in my mind, the images did. Only in high school did I have the chance to appreciate the music associated with this. Needless to say, this segment of The Wall, along with the flower scene, remain some of the more profound, and disturbing memories I associate with music.

Happy Halloween all!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll

To go with the Halloween theme, I coincidentally just discovered this song by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's a recent song, made just April of this year. In my opinion, the music video is pretty "spooky" -- definitely involves costume, and it's entertaining. Treat!

Lyrics available [when you Expand Post]!

"Heads Will Roll" Lyrics:

Off with your head
Dance ’til you’re dead
Heads will roll (4x)
On the floor

Glitter on the west streets
Silver over everything
The rivers all wet
You’re all chrome

Dripping with alchemy
Shiver stop shivering
The glitter’s all wet
You’re all chrome

The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out, oh no
(repeat)

Off with your head
Dance ’til you’re dead
Heads will roll (4x)
On the floor

You can last
Take the past
Shut your eyes
Realize

Glitter on the west streets
Silver over everything
The glitter’s all wet
You’re all chrome
You’re all chrome

Oh oh

Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead

THEME: Halloween.

Hello girls and ghouls! It's Halloween Saturday, so I thought it'd be cool to post up Halloween-related videos. So post your favorite scary music videos or videos that just remind you of Halloween! I'd like to kick it off with a famous song we all know and probably don't love...

Ready for the Floor

So, I first heard about "Ready for the Floor" from one of my friends who happens to be a music junkie. I thought it sounded pretty cool. But, the truth is: this isn't the original song that I heard -- this is a remake that I recently discovered on the TV music channel that I listen to. This remake was done by Lissy Trullie -- I never heard of her before, but her remake was pretty good.

If you're interested in the original version (the one I first listened to), it's by Hot Chip! Interesting song -- and even more interesting music video [expand post]!

Amazing Baby - Head Dress

Amazing Baby is an indie rock band that originated from Brooklyn, NY, in 2008. As Wikipedia puts it, "They are known more for their sense of fashion and connections to popular bands than for their musical talent."

Either way, I heard about this song from a TV channel that only plays rock music. I agree that their fashion sense is interesting, but this song wasn't too bad, either.

The Knife - We Share Our Mother's Health (and the Remix!)

This is my current obsession at the moment: The Knife's "We Share Our Mother's Health". I heard the Ratatat remix first, however, so I'm a bit more partial to the remix... but the original is still very original and fun! (I'm having a hard time choosing which version I like more.)

Here's the original version by The Knife. The Ratatat remix is after the cut. Compare and see for yourself (please don't mind the video for the Ratatat remix... It's utterly random, I know)!

By the way, the music video for the original version of the song is an ambiguous delight and was directed by Motomichi Nakamura. Decipher at will.

"Do You Realize" by The Flaming Lips

I didn't post anything yesterday, and I probably won't post anything tomorrow, but to end my Treasure Island theme week, I have no choice by to put up this song. Such a beautiful song; when The Flaming Lips played it, everyone was brought to tears.

Thao with the Get Down Stay Down "Bag of Hammers"

Keeping with my Treasure Island theme...This girl really reminded me of "Karen O [of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs] doing indie-bubble-gum-pop." She was pretty crazy on stage and she rips on guitar.

NeverShoutNever! - On the Brightside

I just heard of this guy from my friend Jaimee, who designed a logo for him at her internship at Warner Bros. She made me a CD of a bunch of different artists, and my two favorite songs were actually from the same artist: NeverShoutNever! As far as I know, this "band" is only one guy, but I like it. You can find the shirt she designed at Hot Topic, check it out.

I met a man of two feet tall
This man was quite ambitious
In a world that is so vicious to us all
I said hi as he replied
He said listen to these words
That I have lived by my whole life

Your only as tall as your heart will let you be
And your only as small as the world will make you seem
When the going gets rough and you feel like you may fall
Just look on the brightside your roughly six feet tall

I met a man of 12 feet tall
He towered like a giant
In a world that was defiant of his height
I said hi as he replied
He said listen to these words
That i have dreaded my whole life

Your only as tall as your heart will let you be
And your only as small as the world will make you seem
When the going gets rough and you feel like you may fall
Just look on the brightside your roughly six feet tall

I am a man of six feet tall
Just looking for some answers
In a world that answers none of them at all
I'll say hi but not reply
To the letters that you write
Because I found some peace of mind

Cause im only as tall as my heart will let me be
And im only as small as the world will make me seem
When the going gets rough and i feel like i may fall
I'll look on the brightside I'm roughly six feet tall.

Really digging the piano piece.

DJ Okawari - Luv Letter

Pussification.

I'm only posting this because one of these kids recently took off in his parents' home-made air balloon. When it crashed, there was no one inside. On another note, they were on Wife Swap. But the on another note, as of writing this, it's suspected that the kid never got in and this is all just craziness. We'll see... [Updated Oct 16: Yeah the kid was in the attic.]

The Big Pink - Velvet

The Big Pink is actually made up of an electro-rock duo from London, England. They're pretty new, too, starting in 2007. In my opinion, they remind me of a strange mix of MGMT and Radiohead: Electronic music mixed with trippy music videos.

I actually hate this music video -- it freaks me out, but I still like the song. I came across it when surfing through Imeem for new songs. Give it a listen!

Das Racist - Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell

Okay guys, it's been awhile since I have posted. This is my new favorite song. My roommates told me about this one after they heard it on KCRW a little while ago. If you like LMFAO, you'll probably like these guys. I swear, Das Racist (Does the 'das' here rhyme with boss or ass? Hell if I know.) and LMFAO are probably just trolling the entire rap community and it is absolutely hilarious. Anyway, it's not the greatest song, but it's fun as hell and I always manage to hear something new whenever I play it. Which has been a lot of times.

Midnight Oil - Put Down That Weapon

Midnight Oil happens to be a pretty old Australian rock band, starting in the 70s yet still active today. I found this song from one of KUCI's CD sales. The CD was playing on the boom box, and I wanted to buy the album. So I did (for only $0.10)! This particular song was made in the 80s, and you can tell.

Maine recently unearthed this CD, and that's how I remembered it. It's a good listen if you like 80s music!

Sea Wolf - Neutral Ground

Sea Wolf is an indie rock band that originated in Los Angeles. They're a fairly new band, starting in 2003. I found out about them from my friend Jimmy V., and they're pretty good. Pretty mellow music. I heard this song while I was ordering coffee from Milk + Honey. They've always got great music there! And -- if you like "Neutral Ground," you may like their more popular song, "You're a Wolf."

I'm posting a concert version of the song because Youtube doesn't have an official music video. But, if you want to hear the whole song, they've got it on Imeem!

I hella dig the vibe of this song. It's in a promo on Teenick (aka, The N, aka Noggin). (I apologize if the video didn't resize correctly).

Citizen Cope - Let the Drummer Kick

Apparently this song was featured on an Acura commercial. I heard it before but just unearthed it again today. GREAT song.

I was a bit unsure what to label this song as, so I just put hip-hop (though according to the Citizen Cope website his songs are a mix of hip-hop, folk, blues, and good beats).

Band of Horses - The Funeral

Alright, so I haven't been here for a while. I figured it was time to come back.

Band of Horses is an American indie rock band, formed in 2004, so they're a fairly new band. "The Funeral" is one of my favorite indie songs. It came out a few years ago, though, but I like it. I'd say it's a pretty soothing song; something I'd use on a long car ride early in the morning.

This cover of Handbags and Gladrags is the theme song of the UK version of The Office. I really love their opening theme song compared to the US version.

However, I haven't watched enough of The Office UK yet to make an opinion on which is better, but I think it's pretty good so far.
