David Bazan, and Christian Hipsters
Andrew Sullivan (or rather, his guest bloggers) has been doing this bit looking at Christian hipsters, but focusing mainly on music. Sufjan Stevens and Belle & Sebastian mention among them. Today, he posted about David Bazan (and posted an email I sent him).In any case, I'm not sure that David Bazan can really be considered Christian or Hipster. he's in his 30s, though he has the beard, and he doesn't really dress or act in the way you'd expect of a Hipster. And of course, he no longer identifies as Christian. Nevertheless, his legacy of piercing, honest music about God remains.

"Dear God" by Monsters of Folk
My Monsters of Folk album got stuck in my CD player in my car. And it was stuck on this song.

Big Star - Thirteen
Just found out Alex Chilton died before he could play at SXSW. Sad. Probably should do one of these for Nujabes too, huh?

"Half Acre" by Hem
I thought this band was from Ireland, but apparently they are from New York. They say that they are 'indie folk rock,' but it reminds me more of Sarah McClachlan (sp?).

Dustin Kensure - This is War | Damien Rice - Happy Christmas
My last Christmas post, with two songs. I found this song by Dustin Kensrue by accident.
The cover by Damien Rice is after the cut. Not much to say other than it's not as depressing as most of the things Damien rice does, heh.

Johnathan Rice - The Acrobat
He did a record with saddle creek. He kind of looks like Conor Oberst too. His song "We're All Stuck Out in the Desert" sounds like a Bright Eyes song, too. He was also in the movie Walk the Line.

"House at Pooh Corner" by Kenny Loggins
I was watching Full House (episode: "My Left and Right Foot"), and Danny, Joey, and Jesse play this song Jesse's kids. I just dig the song.

Local Natives - World News
Heard of these guys through this music blog that I follow. The author of the blog cited Local Natives' debut album Gorilla Manor as his #1 album of 2009, so I thought I'd give them a listen. This was the first song of theirs that I saw on YouTube. I don't know much about them, but I know I love their sound. Reminds me of the vocals of Grizzly Bear mixed with a music style similar to Arcade Fire...
This is their Myspace page.
This is their blog.

Random/Corny Fact About Yourself: I got into a car accident the first time I drove my car... not twenty feet from my driveway :)
---
Here is my soul mate, er, Josh Ritter. He's a folk singer from Idaho and gained much more popularity in Ireland than he did in the States. His lyrics are enticing, his music moving, and his voice uplifting - he is my epitome of a true musical talent. Also, he is much better live than on record!! Gotta love that. If his music doesn't get you, his personality will! If his personality still doesn't get you, his bassist's mustache will!
This is one if his most famous songs, "Kathleen." Though the quality of the video is pretty horrendous (sorry!), his enthusiasm to be performing transcends the general crappiness of youtube :)

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - "Home"
In continuation of my Treasure Island posts...This is just a really insane folk song. The lead singer use to be in Iam Robot, which is like an indie-dance band.

RIP Mary Travers
Peter, Paul, & Mary - Leaving On A Jet Plane
It is early in the morning (way too early), but I found out that Mary Travers from Peter, Paul, & Mary has passed away. I love this group because I used to listen to them when I was a kid, and I still listen to them at times. Their songs have this calming feel; also, they are one of the greatest folk music groups around.

RIP Ted Kennedy: A Politics Junkie Moment
As anyone who even passively follows the news should know, Ted Kennedy, the last of the Kennedy Brothers, nicknamed the "liberal lion" of the Senate. So, since that day, I've been looking for some kind of tribute song for him, and I found it on Andrew Sullivan's blog (that's where I get all those weird and trippy videos, by the way).
Anyway, Orrin Hatch is one of the musically inclined Senators. And he wrote this song for Ted Kennedy. Yes, he wrote a song. He's actually written several songs. This was co-written with Phil Springer ("Santa Baby").I think this is actually Hatch singing, which is pretty cool. Definitely a nice old man folk style voice. It's kind of unintentionally hilariously patriotic, but it's a nice song and tribute nonetheless.
I'm sure you're wondering what a liberal Democrat from Massachusettes and a conservative Morman Republican from Utah could have in common, but this is a music blog, so just appreciate the music. =p
Edit: The Singer is Tony Middleton. He's a jazz singer of limited fame.

"productivity"
Yeah this song kind of represents just how productive I've felt this summer. I have most of Bazan's stuff, though I think I'm missing a few. Definitely missing a lot of his more recent stuff, though I prefer Pedro the Lion to Headphones or whatever he's doing now.

This song is probably about Matt Pryor
I believe Jim Suptic is the guy you hear singing on songs like "Ten Minutes," though the credits say James Dewees even though his voice sounds nothing like that, heh.
One more video after the cut.
My best friend told me about these guys. I don't trust anyone else more when it comes to music taste.

Alcoholic Faith Mission - Nut In Your Eye
I just found out about this band while randomly checking a music blog. All I know is they are from Denmark and they remind me of Stars, a band that many feel predated bands like Rilo Kiley and Metric. This is one of my favorite songs by Alcoholic Faith Mission, "Nut in Your Eye."
