"Midnight City" by M83
I was assigned as co-class rep alongside this 29-year old girl whose dad struck it rich in the late 80s for writing a screen play that got turned into a film that grossed so-many millions of dollars. Growing up in Hollywood, she exudes this aura of superficiality, but underneath it all she does in fact care about life - down to the most minute level (she has been a veterinary tech for more than five years). We hang out alot in this platonic fashion that I can only describe as "two parts complementing each other" because she regards me a being quietly cerebral and I see her as an over-the-top loud-mouth. In many ways it appears that the concept of us being assigned as co's was either strategically planned or serendipitous. Given the nature of my professor's decision making, it's a good chance that she did a mix of both.
In our furor of stress and finals, this girl and I have been basically tearing up downtown LA, jumping bar to bar, ceaselessly fighting sleep and responsibility. And this girl always plays stuff like Empire of the Sun and M83 [and she actually showed me that Bag Raiders' song I posted a few days back]. When I inquire about her tastes, she tells me, "I am a product of the 80s."
So here we are, driving up and down Fairfax, listening to music. She's pumping her fist to "Midnight City" and I'm smoking a cigarette [which I swear to God is something I never do], and I'm just like, "This song is this moment right now."
And I guess that's the point of my story: This song is this moment right. Or was that moment right then. Or this song just is.

Planningtorock | Doorway
A great song by The Knife's frequent collaborator, Planningtorock. The video is weird (not gonna lie), but this is the first time in a while I've heard a new song that is by a band that sounds similar to The Knife.
I like.
Pitchfork said this song was remniscent of Silent Shout, the famous work of The Knife. I don't entirely agree... It seems more more fit in the album Deep Cuts.

Starfucker | Bury Us Alive
Starfucker | Bury Us Alive
Very cool video... It seems that Starfucker's album Reptilians is very focused on the notion of "life after death" and that death is not an ending, but just the beginning. Personally, I don't know what's in store after death. I truly think that once you die, that's it--your life is done for good. But that doesn't mean that your spirit has ended; you live through the memories of your loved ones and by the works you have left behind. Just like how a celebrity, writer, or musician perishes, yet we still read their books, listen to their music, or post their pictures on Tumblr. My goal isn't to live eternally; my goal is to let my works live forever so that my body will perish, but my spirit will never die.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross | Soft Trees Break the Fall
So... The Social Network soundtrack is quite catchy. I actually heard this song from a time lapse video of the Milky Way, and got hooked. Little did I know that it was from The Social Network. Now I want to hear the rest of the songs. ("Eventually We Find Our Way" is a good one, too. And I just picked that one at random.)
(I suppose there is a good reason why TSN won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in the 83rd Academy Awards.)

America | Tin Man
My dad was playing this on the guitar last night as I sang the lyrics. Made me nostalgic since my dad used to always play 70's folk rock in the car. It's also pretty cool that he had a band in the Philippines and they would play really small gigs in lounges; they played this style of music, which I've come to love thanks to my dad.

Clint Mansell | Tree of Life
Normally I don't post movie soundtracks, but The Fountain is an exception. I watched the movie a month or two ago, but happened upon this video today. Listening to the soundtrack by itself allows me to realize just how beautiful of a film The Fountain is; the music, the emotion, the art, the dialogue.
The scene that this song is played in is actually quite dark and gruesome. Yet this song is upbeat and deceivingly positive.

Björk | Crystalline
Fantastic new song and video, "Crystalline," by Björk released on June 28th. I need to listen to her songs more often! Also... I am not quite sure how to categorize Björk's music... She's very eclectic. I guess this song sounded electronic, so I'll list it as such.

Loney Dear - My Heart
New album coming out from Polyvinyl Record Co. -- Loney Dear's Hall Music. Below is a link to the first track of the album, "My Heart". The beginning doesn't seem as interesting, but the pace certainly picks up and develops into an ethereal and vivacious piece. In an odd sense, the bells in the background remind me of either a church or a wedding. Or a wedding in a church.
And guess what? The man is Swedish (name is Emil Svanängen). I'm obsessed with these Swedish musicians!

Chuckie Akenz - Reality
My friend sent me this song yesterday. The first thing I noticed was that he used the song Saeglopur by Sigur Ros in the background. The first time I heard him, he was all gangsta and all of that from his songs "You Got Beef" and I was just thinking man this guy is hardcore lol. At least in this song he got better lyrically and soften down a bit haha. Hate it/like it, it's all good.

One of the songs that hit home for me at the Album Leaf concert in Detroit Bar last week.
Great show. I did not know any other songs except for "Always for You" (thanks to Mark), but I was pleasantly surprised by their ambient, mellow hums. Most of the songs are instrumental, but even without dialogue the songs evoke strong emotions and feelings from the past.

"Calgary" by Bon Iver
I started an art/music/film/video games/literature blog called NO PIECE. I hope to expand in to different subjects like health and food, introduce contributing writers [especially for "art," "health," and "food," haha], and turn the whole hot mess into a cohesive webzine serving under my "indie"/underground webmagnate. (No seriously, click that link.)
I'm not doing this as means to undermine The Wire Box (that was the mission of This is Cereal, muhahahaha). If anything, The Wire Box was my inspiration for No Piece: A webzine that, although only consists of me, has varying opinions and multiple authors/writers. Perhaps I will fine some way to integrate The Wire Box suggestions. We'll see.
While there are many authors for this blog, there isn't a proportionate amount of active members. (A review of the past four weeks shows at least 3-4 different users including me.) Ergo, I'm just giving a shout out for all you oldies or absentees to come back around and start posting on this site. Not to say that the current music suggestions are bad (they are actually really good considering the amount of active members), but it would be nice to see more "faces."
Self-indulgent rant aside, Bon Iver's Bon Iver, Bon Iver is going to be the first album I review. I wanted to put up "Perth" but YouTube keeps taking down videos featuring the song. "Calgary" is just as fine. The album is incredible.

On the contrary, the song--although catchy and romantic--has a melancholy undertone. The lyrics (posted after the cut) and title appear to refer to a deliberate car crash as a successful attempt by two lovers to commit suicide. Got this idea from Song Meanings and speculation.

iamamiwhoami - t
Yes, the song is called "t" by yet another Swedish enigma. There are other songs the artist made that are titled with a single letter; when you put the letters together, they form the word "bounty". Weird, perplexing, and catchy. I like.
P.S. The titles of iamamiwhoami songs resemble that of an E.E. Cummings poem.

Zeigeist - Tar Heart
Zeigeist is incredible. I like "Tar Heart" from their 2008 album The Jade Motel. Why did this band have to break up?! Another note on the song--many people claim that the song sounds like Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" and The Knife's "Pass This On". To me, the vocals more closely resemble Fever Ray's "Wolf" more than "Pass This On".

Junior Boys - ep
The album is remniscent of their first album release, Last Exit, in 2004. I'm more fond of their tunes on Begone Dull Care (2009). But their 2011 track "ep", which I've embedded below, is catchy, mellow, and attractive. You can download the song for free at http://www.dominorecordco.com/juniorboys/. I'm intrigued to discover the other album tracks, knowing that I am lured by sounds from past hits like "Parallel Lines" and "In the Morning" (2007).

"Transatlanticism" by Death Cab for Cutie
In regards to the theme I posted a month ago, this is the last song that played. Thanks for the song selection. Honestly, around mile 7, I turned off my music because I was getting flustered (I was going through some emotional breakdown, haha), but I turned it back on around mile 11-12, and "The Reeling" came on, and I listened to music until the end.

RE: Music that 'pumps you up.'
In regards to Mark's post, I just found out about this song at the Starfucker concert. It's a mash-up of Gucci Mane & SKELETRON - Running Back vs. Dragon Monkey.
I'll post more songs that I can think of later.. But at the top of my head:
The Knife - Kino
The Knife - We Share Our Mother's Health (Ratatat Remix)
Crystal Castles - Intimate
Royksopp ft. Fever Ray - This Must Be It
Starfucker - Medicine
La Roux - Colourless Colour
Ratatat - Seventeen Years
The Pass - Colors

THEME: Music that 'pumps you up.'
I don't know how to phrase it, but I need music that physically gets you going.
I should probably explain: I plan to do a half marathon in approximately 45 days, with my first "test" run (13.1 miles) in four weeks. As of right now, after about seventy days of training, I can do 11 miles (11.25 to be exact) at approximately 9 mins per a mile (plus-or-minus 30 secs). From this, I am estimating my half marathon time will be approximately 2.5 hours (which is below average, but it's more important you finish than you go fast). Ergo, I need approximately two and a half hours of music. I need you guys to provide me the soundtrack that will supplement my victory (LOL) or defeat (likely).
Right now I know I'll start out with Thrice's "Cold Cash and Colder Hearts" and aptly finish with "Transatlanticism" by Death Cab for Cutie, and for sure I will have Radiohead's "Bodysnatchers" in the middle. As you can tell, these are fairly diverse musical selections, ergo, anything goes as long as it gets you "pumped." Seriously, don't be afraid to suggest/recommend 5-10 songs (just don't recommend whole albums). I'm pretty sure it'll take about 30-40 songs (if the average song is four mins long) to fill my quota.
Too long, didn't read: I need 2.5 hours of music to listen to whilst I partake in a physically-demanding [for me at least] endeavor. Make it good "box-heads" (LOL).
