Air - How Does It Make You Feel?
More French artists (and weird music videos)! This is Air, a French electronica duo formed in 1995. I think the video for their song "How Does It Make You Feel?" is one of the trippiest and oddest music videos I've ever seen... But the song is great (in a ... spaced out yet intriguingly enticing) kind of way. Their music reminds me of Pink Floyd...

Dustin Kensure - This is War | Damien Rice - Happy Christmas
My last Christmas post, with two songs. I found this song by Dustin Kensrue by accident.
The cover by Damien Rice is after the cut. Not much to say other than it's not as depressing as most of the things Damien rice does, heh.

"Brick" by Ben Folds Five
I guess this is a Christmas song. It's heavily rumored [and once confirmed by Ben Folds] that the song is about Ben Folds' college girlfriend having to get an abortion. I guess the only Christmas allusion is the part where Ben Folds talks about having to sell his Christmas presents at a pawn shop to fund the said-abortion. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Sliimy - Wake Up
Merry Christmas everyone!!
Again, this isn't a Christmas song but I heard this as I was shopping (in Macy's) for Christmas clothes...so I suppose that counts. It's a happy-go-lucky and upbeat tune that would keep me going through the day. (By the way, I also heard "Bag of Hammers" by Thao with the Get Down Stay Down in the same Macy's.)
Sliimy - Wake Up
I read on a Twitter somewhere that Sliimy looks and sounds like Mika... and I concur. He's apparently a French pop singer. (Hmm, his style of singing also reminds me of Lily Allen's singing style.)
He also made a cover of Britney Spears' "Womanizer", which I've included when you expand the post, haha. I like it!

Zee Avi - No Christmas For Me this Year
So, here's the story. I'm a frequent reader of Angry Asian Man, who gave a little promotion to UCI alum Lilian Bui who is not the nursing major I shared a dorm with, but shares the same name. Anyway, Ms. Bui did a rendition of this song, and upon hearing the original version, I decided they were very similar and went with posting the original.
Both of their voices are similar and ring of old school jazz style (like Ella Fitzgerald or Madeleine Peyroux) mixed with a little bit of the childishness of Regina Spector (except they're both better singers, in my opinion). Anyway, the song is pretty and Zee Avi apparently released an album recently, and the rest of her music is also pretty good. She's Malaysian, born in Borneo, so it's really weird to hear an Asian sing like this rather than something off TFC or youtube. Zee Avi's definitely an artist I intend to follow.

Roy Orbison - Pretty Paper
Courtesy of The Daily Dish, I found this pretty little song. The Dish has been cataloging a series of depressing Christmas songs, and this one, about a homeless man during the Christmas bustle, fits the tone somewhat.
the song was written by Willie Nelson of all people, and does have that country feel, but Orbison is known a lot more for his rock music. Other than that, I dunno how to really classify this song other than soothing, sad, and pretty.

Big D & the Kids Table, Black Element, and DJ BC - A Wicked Hip Hop Christmas
This song is a random remix of a Big D & the Kids Table song "A Wicked Hardcore Christmas" which is about the Red Sox winning the World Series. Seriously. It was written that terrible year. It was also probably about being ridiculously drunk. It's likely, it's a Big D song.
Anyway, in addition to that, it seems that this video was filmed to promote an upcoming movie called Jungle Bell Rocks, which is about out-of-the-mainstream Christmas songs. It calls itself a "a pop culture pilgrimage into the odd and irreverent universe of alternative Christmas music." Some of that stuff seems worth lending an ear. Though, I'm not sure how it'll work as a real movie.
Super Furry Animals - The Very Best of Neil Diamond
In lieu of my search for good Christmas music (it's a hard thing to do), I came upon a certain music blog. The author wrote about an album that was released on March 16, 2009 called Dark Days/Light Years by Super Furry Animals, a Welsh band formed in 1993.
Their sound can be characterized as psychedelic, experimental rock... Very 80s-esque, which is why I like them! One of their most popular songs in their album is "The Very Best of Neil Diamond", which I posted here. After the cut, you can also listen to their song "Inaugural Trams", which features a German solo by Nick McCarthy of Franz Ferdinand!
Very interesting music... I doubt you'll find them boring.

THEME: Christmas
Christmas is coming, so if you don't want to be on the naughty list, you'd better get in the damned Christmas Spirit, got it? In all seriousness, it's probably a good week to start posting Christmas (or other Holiday or winter related songs) [The other good week to do a Christmas theme would clearly be in July]. So, post what have you whether they be old classics, new takes on old songs, completely new songs, or the entirety of Sufjan Stevens' five freaking disc Songs for Christmas box set.
Now instead of posting a song, I'm going to be meta and post Eddie Izzard telling a joke about a song because I do what I want. I roll with 12 gangs.
*I apologize for the terrible joke that started this post.

Johnathan Rice - The Acrobat
He did a record with saddle creek. He kind of looks like Conor Oberst too. His song "We're All Stuck Out in the Desert" sounds like a Bright Eyes song, too. He was also in the movie Walk the Line.

Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust
I was on a quest to find new music, well new for me at least, so lamely, I googled "good alternative rock bands" and I came across Poets of the Fall, a Finnish independent rock band. I looked them up on youtube, and found this music video. It's really eerie and trippy, but I kinda like it. And I think it kind of reminds me of that movie A.I. a few years back. Anyways, check it out:

Local Natives - World News
Heard of these guys through this music blog that I follow. The author of the blog cited Local Natives' debut album Gorilla Manor as his #1 album of 2009, so I thought I'd give them a listen. This was the first song of theirs that I saw on YouTube. I don't know much about them, but I know I love their sound. Reminds me of the vocals of Grizzly Bear mixed with a music style similar to Arcade Fire...

UPDATED: TV on the Radio - Dancing Choose
I was actually introduced to TV on the Radio by a friend who posts on The Wire Box -- he goes by wordyshaman. Thanks, Yuan! He told me about TVotR's album "Return to Cookie Mountain" -- it's pretty awesome, but a totally different sound than this song I'm posting.
Another friend of mine actually told me and Maine about this TVotR song. I like the fact that it's so fast-paced and dance-y. But like I said, it's a completely different sound than their other album, so I had no idea that it was them at first. Definitely a bit experimental, but the song sticks to your head. The music video's pretty cool, too, so check it out!
UPDATE: You can now listen to the song again. Apparently they removed the actual video, but I hope you enjoy the song in general!

Zephyr Riot - Mindsight
A local band--Zephyr Riot! I actually knew about these guys a while ago but thought I'd share some of their music with you all. I know one of the band members goes to UCI, but I'm not sure about the others.
Anyway, I'm in love with their "folk rock-esque" nature. (They even play a mandolin!) It was cool because Charlene even got me an autographed copy of one of their CDs for our 20th birthday haha.
Below is a clip from a Circle K Talent Show from last year. I'm actually in the audience, ha. As evidenced by this video, they're great live, and they even won first place in the Talent Show! Look out for these guys. (And here's a link to their Myspace page.)

UPDATED: La Roux - Bulletproof
Maine told me about this band, and she found out about them on Youtube.
La Roux consists of an English electropop duo: singer Eleanor Jackson and synth player Ben Langmaid. The name "La Roux" actually means "the red one" in French, and it's based on the fact that Jackson has distinctly red hair.
Have you noticed her fashion style? Wikipedia states that she co-designs her clothes with her pet dog, Snappy. Interesting. Anyways, her music definitely isn't what you'd hear in the "mainstream," so give it a listen. It's really upbeat and flashy -- a good song if you're a fan of electropop.
UPDATE: Posted the song again. Now working and available for your listening pleasure! :) (If you want to see the real video, go to this link.)

Update: Titles
Hey everyone! Hope you all had a wonderfull Thanksgiving!
I just got a suggestion that titles of blog entries should have the name and group name of the video/song you are sharing (in the "Group name - Song Title" format)! This would also be helpful for those who check out the archive section since your entry will not show up in the Archives without a title.
Thanks for your cooperation everyoneee!
Sincerely,
Charmaine

Here is my soul mate, er, Josh Ritter. He's a folk singer from Idaho and gained much more popularity in Ireland than he did in the States. His lyrics are enticing, his music moving, and his voice uplifting - he is my epitome of a true musical talent. Also, he is much better live than on record!! Gotta love that. If his music doesn't get you, his personality will! If his personality still doesn't get you, his bassist's mustache will!
This is one if his most famous songs, "Kathleen." Though the quality of the video is pretty horrendous (sorry!), his enthusiasm to be performing transcends the general crappiness of youtube :)

Gym Class Heroes - Live a Little
In case you aren't familiar, Gym Class Heroes is known for their song, "Cupids Chokehold," which is actually a remake of the song "Breakfast In America" by Supertramp, a popular band in the 70s.
I probably would never have thought of posting a song by the Gym Class Heroes here, but this song is different -- it was filmed at the Bren Events Center at UCI! Give it a watch! It's pretty awesome :)
The song isn't too bad, either.

Loose Lips by Kimya Dawson
I'm learning to play this song right now. I just heard it on the Juno Soundtrack (one of my favorites btw), and I liked the simplicity of the rhythm mixed with the fast lyrics. Listen closely or read the lyrics below, and the song will be a lot cooler.
Lyrics:
loose lips might sink ships but loose gooses take trips
to san francisco, double dutch disco,
tech tv hottie, do it for scotty
do it for the living and do it for the dead
do it for the monsters under your bed
do it for the teenagers and do it for your mom
broken hearts hurt but they make us strong and
we won't stop until somebody calls the cops
and even then we'll start again and just pretend that
nothing ever happened
we won't stop until somebody calls the cops
and even then we'll start again and just pretend that
nothing ever happened
we're just dancing, we're just hugging,
singing, screaming, kissing, tugging
on the sleeve of how it used to be
how's it gonna be?
i'll drop kick russell stover, move into the starting over house
and know matt rouse and jest are watching me achieve my dreams
and we'll pray, all damn day, every day,
that all this shit our president has got us in will go away
while we strive to figure out a way we can survive
these trying times without losing our minds
so if you wanna burn yourself remember that I LOVE YOU
and if you wanna cut yourself remember that I LOVE YOU
and if you wanna kill yourself remember that I LOVE YOU
call me up before your dead, we can make some plans instead
send me an IM, i'll be your friend
shysters live from scheme to scheme and my 4th quarter pipe dreams
are seeming more and more worth fighting for
so i'll curate some situations, make my job a big vacation
and i'll say FUCK BUSH AND FUCK THIS WAR
my war paint is sharpie ink and i'll show you how much my shit stinks
and ask you what you think because your thoughts and words are powerful
they think we're disposable, well both my thumbs opposable
are spelled out on a double word and triple letter score
we won't stop until somebody calls the cops
and even then we'll start again and just pretend that
nothing ever happened
we won't stop until somebody calls the cops
and even then we'll start again and just pretend that
nothing ever happened
we're just dancing, we're just hugging,

Nurses - Wait for a Safe Sign
Wiki excerpt:
Nurses is a Portland-based indie rock trio comprised of Aaron Chapman (vocals, guitar, keyboard), John Bowers (backing vocals, keyboard), and James Mitchell (percussionist & visual artist). Their sound is often categorized as psychedelic pop, folk rock, and experimental. Girls Just Want to Have Fun -- with an Indie Makeover
[Edit: Apparently, Starfucker changed their name to "PYRAMIDDD" just this past October. Hmm.]
Happy Halloween all!
I'm posting another song by PYRAMIDDD, one of my favorite indie bands. Lately, I've been listening to a Cyndi Lauper CD a friend gave me; the song "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" inevitably came up.
PYRAMIDDD covered the song, which I am posting here for you all. It's quite quirky (and perky). They did a good job!
Here's a link to Cyndi Lauper's original version of the song.

And an interesting find--The Killers covered the song as well (huh?!).
(By the way, Miley Cyrus covered the song too, apparently. This would be my Halloween song to go with the theme, if you get my drift.)

The Swimmers - A Hundred Hearts
This song doesn't relate to Halloween, but it's one that I've really enjoyed ever since I heard it. Found out about this song through the awesome TV music channel that I have, and I've watched this video clip on YouTube more than 30 times ever since I discovered it. Wish there was an actual music video, but this band seems to be so indie that there weren't even lyrics available for it.
Enjoy!

Pink Floyd - Goodbye Blue Sky
An oldie, but goodie.
I first saw this on a late night slot of PBS in Denver when I knew only a few words of English. For me, it was one of those childhood things that you don't understand, and yet vividly remember. Although the lyrics didn't stick well in my mind, the images did. Only in high school did I have the chance to appreciate the music associated with this. Needless to say, this segment of The Wall, along with the flower scene, remain some of the more profound, and disturbing memories I associate with music.
Happy Halloween all!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll
To go with the Halloween theme, I coincidentally just discovered this song by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's a recent song, made just April of this year. In my opinion, the music video is pretty "spooky" -- definitely involves costume, and it's entertaining. Treat!

"Heads Will Roll" Lyrics:
Off with your head
Dance ’til you’re dead
Heads will roll (4x)
On the floor
Glitter on the west streets
Silver over everything
The rivers all wet
You’re all chrome
Dripping with alchemy
Shiver stop shivering
The glitter’s all wet
You’re all chrome
The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out, oh no
(repeat)
Off with your head
Dance ’til you’re dead
Heads will roll (4x)
On the floor
You can last
Take the past
Shut your eyes
Realize
Glitter on the west streets
Silver over everything
The glitter’s all wet
You’re all chrome
You’re all chrome
Oh oh
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head

THEME: Halloween.
Hello girls and ghouls! It's Halloween Saturday, so I thought it'd be cool to post up Halloween-related videos. So post your favorite scary music videos or videos that just remind you of Halloween! I'd like to kick it off with a famous song we all know and probably don't love...

Ready for the Floor
So, I first heard about "Ready for the Floor" from one of my friends who happens to be a music junkie. I thought it sounded pretty cool. But, the truth is: this isn't the original song that I heard -- this is a remake that I recently discovered on the TV music channel that I listen to. This remake was done by Lissy Trullie -- I never heard of her before, but her remake was pretty good.
If you're interested in the original version (the one I first listened to), it's by Hot Chip! Interesting song -- and even more interesting music video [expand post]!

Amazing Baby - Head Dress
Amazing Baby is an indie rock band that originated from Brooklyn, NY, in 2008. As Wikipedia puts it, "They are known more for their sense of fashion and connections to popular bands than for their musical talent."
Either way, I heard about this song from a TV channel that only plays rock music. I agree that their fashion sense is interesting, but this song wasn't too bad, either.

The Knife - We Share Our Mother's Health (and the Remix!)
This is my current obsession at the moment: The Knife's "We Share Our Mother's Health". I heard the Ratatat remix first, however, so I'm a bit more partial to the remix... but the original is still very original and fun! (I'm having a hard time choosing which version I like more.)
Here's the original version by The Knife. The Ratatat remix is after the cut. Compare and see for yourself (please don't mind the video for the Ratatat remix... It's utterly random, I know)!
By the way, the music video for the original version of the song is an ambiguous delight and was directed by Motomichi Nakamura. Decipher at will.

"Do You Realize" by The Flaming Lips
I didn't post anything yesterday, and I probably won't post anything tomorrow, but to end my Treasure Island theme week, I have no choice by to put up this song. Such a beautiful song; when The Flaming Lips played it, everyone was brought to tears.

Thao with the Get Down Stay Down "Bag of Hammers"
Keeping with my Treasure Island theme...This girl really reminded me of "Karen O [of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs] doing indie-bubble-gum-pop." She was pretty crazy on stage and she rips on guitar.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - "Home"
In continuation of my Treasure Island posts...This is just a really insane folk song. The lead singer use to be in Iam Robot, which is like an indie-dance band.

"The Rake's Song" by The Decemberists
I went to the Treasure Island Music Festival this past week, so every night I'll post up a song I dug from the concert [in no real order]. This is a hella dancey/indie rock song.

NeverShoutNever! - On the Brightside
I just heard of this guy from my friend Jaimee, who designed a logo for him at her internship at Warner Bros. She made me a CD of a bunch of different artists, and my two favorite songs were actually from the same artist: NeverShoutNever! As far as I know, this "band" is only one guy, but I like it. You can find the shirt she designed at Hot Topic, check it out.
I met a man of two feet tall
This man was quite ambitious
In a world that is so vicious to us all
I said hi as he replied
He said listen to these words
That I have lived by my whole life
Your only as tall as your heart will let you be
And your only as small as the world will make you seem
When the going gets rough and you feel like you may fall
Just look on the brightside your roughly six feet tall
I met a man of 12 feet tall
He towered like a giant
In a world that was defiant of his height
I said hi as he replied
He said listen to these words
That i have dreaded my whole life
Your only as tall as your heart will let you be
And your only as small as the world will make you seem
When the going gets rough and you feel like you may fall
Just look on the brightside your roughly six feet tall
I am a man of six feet tall
Just looking for some answers
In a world that answers none of them at all
I'll say hi but not reply
To the letters that you write
Because I found some peace of mind
Cause im only as tall as my heart will let me be
And im only as small as the world will make me seem
When the going gets rough and i feel like i may fall
I'll look on the brightside I'm roughly six feet tall.

Pussification.
I'm only posting this because one of these kids recently took off in his parents' home-made air balloon. When it crashed, there was no one inside. On another note, they were on Wife Swap. But the on another note, as of writing this, it's suspected that the kid never got in and this is all just craziness. We'll see... [Updated Oct 16: Yeah the kid was in the attic.]
The Big Pink - Velvet
The Big Pink is actually made up of an electro-rock duo from London, England. They're pretty new, too, starting in 2007. In my opinion, they remind me of a strange mix of MGMT and Radiohead: Electronic music mixed with trippy music videos.
I actually hate this music video -- it freaks me out, but I still like the song. I came across it when surfing through Imeem for new songs. Give it a listen!

Das Racist - Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell
Okay guys, it's been awhile since I have posted. This is my new favorite song. My roommates told me about this one after they heard it on KCRW a little while ago. If you like LMFAO, you'll probably like these guys. I swear, Das Racist (Does the 'das' here rhyme with boss or ass? Hell if I know.) and LMFAO are probably just trolling the entire rap community and it is absolutely hilarious. Anyway, it's not the greatest song, but it's fun as hell and I always manage to hear something new whenever I play it. Which has been a lot of times.

Midnight Oil - Put Down That Weapon
Midnight Oil happens to be a pretty old Australian rock band, starting in the 70s yet still active today. I found this song from one of KUCI's CD sales. The CD was playing on the boom box, and I wanted to buy the album. So I did (for only $0.10)! This particular song was made in the 80s, and you can tell.
Maine recently unearthed this CD, and that's how I remembered it. It's a good listen if you like 80s music!

Sea Wolf - Neutral Ground
Sea Wolf is an indie rock band that originated in Los Angeles. They're a fairly new band, starting in 2003. I found out about them from my friend Jimmy V., and they're pretty good. Pretty mellow music. I heard this song while I was ordering coffee from Milk + Honey. They've always got great music there! And -- if you like "Neutral Ground," you may like their more popular song, "You're a Wolf."
I'm posting a concert version of the song because Youtube doesn't have an official music video. But, if you want to hear the whole song, they've got it on Imeem!

"We Are Golden" by Mika
I hella dig the vibe of this song. It's in a promo on Teenick (aka, The N, aka Noggin). (I apologize if the video didn't resize correctly).
Happy B-day
Deleted my previous post to replace this one. Beverly and I's song. Happy 20th birthday to my amazing girlfriend.

Citizen Cope - Let the Drummer Kick
Apparently this song was featured on an Acura commercial. I heard it before but just unearthed it again today. GREAT song.
I was a bit unsure what to label this song as, so I just put hip-hop (though according to the Citizen Cope website his songs are a mix of hip-hop, folk, blues, and good beats).

Band of Horses - The Funeral
Alright, so I haven't been here for a while. I figured it was time to come back.
Band of Horses is an American indie rock band, formed in 2004, so they're a fairly new band. "The Funeral" is one of my favorite indie songs. It came out a few years ago, though, but I like it. I'd say it's a pretty soothing song; something I'd use on a long car ride early in the morning.

This song has some good rhythm. I'm totally digging Daft Punk and this kind of music right now. Check out Club Bang.

Started listening to linedotstar just this week. Listen to "As it Unfolds Slowly" @ linedotstar's MySpace. (There's no YouTube videos or anything.)

So What Becomes of You, My Love...
Big George - Handbags and Gladrags
This cover of Handbags and Gladrags is the theme song of the UK version of The Office. I really love their opening theme song compared to the US version.
However, I haven't watched enough of The Office UK yet to make an opinion on which is better, but I think it's pretty good so far.
