=)

One of my favorite songs from a great movie. I search through youtube for a good version of this song. There's also a guy with a ukelele and a girl with a cello, but I preferred this version.

classic

Notorious B.I.G. feat Puff Daddy & Mase - Mo' Money, Mo' Problems

The Mae Shi - Run to Your Grave

The Mae Shi is an "indie/synth pop/visual" band (according to their Facebook account), formed in Los Angeles back in 2002. I've only heard this song by them, "Run to Your Grave," which I discovered through Pandora. The quirky, upbeat melody is really quite charming (not to mention the self-directed music video).

DISCUSSION: IndieCon.

I came up with this idea tonight - IndieCon. A conference of independent music, visual arts, film, literature, politics/causes, and culinary arts. I plan for it to be a one day thing - DJs and acoustic performances during the day; booths and such too. There will be a "community" [organic] garden, and food vendors will be brought in on the one condition that they exclusively use the garden. I plan to close the night off with two bands and a film screening. Very low budget. Very low-fi. Very indie.

Please offer your opinions - i.e., locations, ticket prices, promotional ideas, bands/people/authors/film makers/food vendors/etc. who'd be interested, etc. They are vital for IndieCon.

RIP Ted Kennedy: A Politics Junkie Moment

As anyone who even passively follows the news should know, Ted Kennedy, the last of the Kennedy Brothers, nicknamed the "liberal lion" of the Senate. So, since that day, I've been looking for some kind of tribute song for him, and I found it on Andrew Sullivan's blog (that's where I get all those weird and trippy videos, by the way).

Anyway, Orrin Hatch is one of the musically inclined Senators. And he wrote this song for Ted Kennedy. Yes, he wrote a song. He's actually written several songs. This was co-written with Phil Springer ("Santa Baby"). I think this is actually Hatch singing, which is pretty cool. Definitely a nice old man folk style voice. It's kind of unintentionally hilariously patriotic, but it's a nice song and tribute nonetheless.
I'm sure you're wondering what a liberal Democrat from Massachusettes and a conservative Morman Republican from Utah could have in common, but this is a music blog, so just appreciate the music. =p

Edit: The Singer is Tony Middleton. He's a jazz singer of limited fame.

Heard this song when I was hanging out with my friend from high school today.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Down Boy

From their EP Is Is, "Down Boy" is one of my favorite songs by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. (BUT, I didn't even listen to the whole EP so... I suppose that's not a fair judgment.)

Anyway, my friend burned me a mixed CD with this song a while back. Started listening to it again recently and wanted to share it with you all!

Secret Slogan

Some of you might be familiar with a little Japanese band called The Pillows. For those in the anime crowd, they did the music for FLCL. Aside from that, they have an extensive discography of catchy little tunes. Among them is this particularly cute little bit: a hidden song on their album "Fool on the Planet". Apparently the band members decided to switch instruments and have a simple jam session. Enjoy!

Vote for Clara

Please go and vote for her Here. I'm not entirely sure why I'm campaigning for her, but she's definitely become on of my favorite youtube people (after AJ and Reesa methinks). I posted her cover of "Misery Business/Hit Em Up Style" for the contest on the blog a while back. So, now that ISA has resolved the fact that people were spamming the vote, go and vote for Clara!

Anyway, her cover of "Gravity" has been getting a lot of plays on my youtube playlist, so here that is:

Th song's really catchy. The video's pretty trippy. I get that it's a tribute to both the NES and Legos, but sometimes it doesn't make too much sense, haha.

The Higher - The Runaway Artist

The Higher has got some great new stuff. They mix their new music with more pop, R&B, and Hip Hop recently. One article described them as: "If Justin Timberlake were a band, he would be The Higher." (a pretty accurate description actually). Please enjoy The Runaway Artist. To me it sounds like a song of hope.

Standing side of the street
I see you walking away
Her car and bags are packed
Heading straight for LA
More of a reason to go
Less of a reason to stay
With every mile she goes a memory fades away

Not really hip in her school
Unsatisfied with the crowd
Only looking for some place where she can be found
The poetry that she writes
A different kind of release
If they cant hear her scream
Maybe they'll hear her sing

La la la la
La la la and I know that she will be fine if she tries

Mmm
The days turned into months the months they turned into years
On a road to fame shedding too many tears
A few letters to home it just wasn't the same
They even made her change her name
On the way to work turned on the radio
And I heard a familiar voice that I know
She had gotten her dream and became a star
And her voice rang out from in my car

La la la la
La la la and I know that she will be fine if she tries
And she sang
La la la la
La la la and I know that she will be fine if she tries
But she's trying too hard to run away
From everything she left behind
And if she's gonna do this on her own
Then she leaves tonight
And they called her a runaway

La la la la
La la la and I know that she will be fine if she tries
La la la la
La la la and I know that she will be fine if she tries

And she said you're not gonna take away my dream
Cuz I'm running away and soon you'll see
That things will be fine if I try (that things will be fine if she tries)

And she said you're just wasting your breath on me
Cuz I've made up my mind and soon you'll see
That things will be fine if I try (that things will be fine if she tries)

And they called her a runaway

Kid Cudi - I Poke Her Face (Feat. Kanye West & Common)

I really like when the beats are like this; simple sample over a nice beat; nothing too overplayed or overdone. And I can't help notice how Regina-Spektor-esque Lady GaGa can get.

Waltz #1 - Elliott Smith

I dig this song. You can ignore the visual portion, haha.

A Heckauva lot more talented than that other Korean girl that goes to our school...

I'm sorry, but I'm not her biggest fan, heh.

Anyway, a couple of my friends had been promoting this girl for a while and finally decided to check it out. And I was just kind of amazed. She has musical talent: piano, guitar, melodica, flute, and cajon and the voice. But she also apparently has the skills for video and audio recording and editing. And she arranged it. So, to say the least, I'm impressed.

She's apparently in first place in views for this contest by International Secret Agents (which is somehow related to Wong Fu productions, I haven't really bothered to look into that). The current second place guy is some guy singing pretty blandly while hitting himself for percussion. So yeah, I really think she should win =p

I first heard this song when this guy in his car was singing it outloud during a red light on the right side of the lane.

Blue Boy - Texas is the Reason

Before emo was singing about black parades and such, it was really known to be born from the ashes of punk rock, characterized by raw vocals and sparse production. It's rare you'll find a band like that nowadays. Okay not really. But I am very sure that Texas is the Reason is definitely one of my favorite old school emo bands. I first found out about them from a friend who use to Kazaa the shit out of her computer. Actually, I remember her showing me Dashboard Confessional for the first time when his first album (Swiss Army Romance) was "leaked." I'm not saying I heard about them first, but hearing the leaked version of Swiss Army Romance is probably as OG as seeing Adam [of the book of Genesis] as a fetus.

"productivity"

Yeah this song kind of represents just how productive I've felt this summer. I have most of Bazan's stuff, though I think I'm missing a few. Definitely missing a lot of his more recent stuff, though I prefer Pedro the Lion to Headphones or whatever he's doing now.

Coldplay - Strawberry Swing

So I've been in a weird mood, musically that is, and I've just watched this video about a trillion times since my friend showed it to me.

So it's Coldplay's Strawberry Swing, and it captivates me both musically and visually. Knowing how much time it would take to accomplish this is just mind boggling.

woo demos

This seems to happen a lot with Brand new, but these demos definitely sound a lot more like demos than their previous set. I really like this vocal lacking track which sounds a bit reminiscent of Your Favorite Weapon. But my guess is most of Daisy will sound like this:

There's a lot of live videos and demos of their new stuff on youtube, so yeah.

Sunny Day Real Estate - Seven

Although they weren't the first of the genre, Sunny Day Real Estate were instrumental in establishing the emo genre. The bassist went on to play in a band known as Foo Fighters (maybe you've heard of them?). Rediscovered Sunny Day Real Estate while listening to Jawbreaker and Planes Mistaken for Stars (the latter is similar to Sunny Day Real Estate). If you're into early Jimmy Eat World (i.e., "What I Would Say To You Now") you would hella dig Sunny Day, especially since so many parallels are drawn between the bands. Also, Paramore covered "Faces in Disguise" by Sunny Day.

Leon Thomas - Keep It 100

Leon Thomas III (LT3) is probably famously known as that little black kid (Arthur) in the film August Rush. I came across this guy once again while watching iCarly, which is probably the most legit kids' show on TV. There are so many subtle satirical remarks about kids television (i.e., anything on Disney); everything from mocking Hannah Montana (specifically the actual actress Miley Cyrus) to how most kid stars sell out. It's like the indie kid's TV show mixed with the good parts of The Catcher in the Rye.

This is his song "Keep It 100." For reals, one of the most original acoustic/R&B songs I've ever heard. In a [YouTube] world filled with cookie cutter guys (you know what I'm talking about - guy, acoustic guitar, m7 chords), LT3 is probably one of the most legit artists out there.

MUCC

While bored at work, I recently rediscovered a Japanese Rock band, MUCC. They're basically your usual Hard Rock Japanese group (a bit Visual Kei), but until today I'd never thought to research them further. I was randomly looking into a few lyrics translations for some of their songs and found them to be really amazing. Although their PVs (promotional videos, aka: music videos) are mostly less than spectacular and very typical of J-Rock, the music and lyrics more than make up for it. With that, I give you a small sampling of my personal "Best of MUCC".

First and foremost, my personal favorite song of the moment:

MUCC - 流星 (Ryuusei [Falling Stars])

Video: here

[lyrics and more after the break]

Lyrics (translated):
The sleeper keeps small petals lined up side-by-side with a rusty rail track
I walk with naked feet in a grassland, I look up at random--starry sky without moon
Panorama of falling stars down-pouring, twinkling of many thousands of light-years.
The Greek mythologies of spargles paint this pure sky of a pale deep blue,
Damp tiptoes, I look at the sky, I walk
Leading your hand, inside the dirty palm of your hand.

I don’t forget the true landscape’s color you used to love.
Nevertheless, now even stardust is shining too much.

Trembling lover submerged in tears
This fastened hand, so sadly warm.

Don’t forget the beauty of the future seen in your dream
Group of falling stars, stars vanished, your smile

Blame me of having closed your sky
In this sky that you look up at, now what are you thinking about?

Trembling lover submerged in tears
This fastened hand, slender, feeble
Streaming, your tears looks like stars
Now, in this sky filled up, become a meteor

Stars are coloring this pure sky, rail track is wet by the night fog
On the rusting-away sleeper, the 4-petal flowers keep the faddish life
As if fastened hands couldn't let go themselves
As if fastened fingers couldn't let go

High in the sky, falling stars are raining incessantly, like an early-summer rain or a light shower in autumn
On this Earth, maniac of cleanliness, I walk with naked feet on the tracks of this sole rail track
Fastened warm hand
The muck palm of your hand

Panorama of falling stars down-pouring, I walk on damp tiptoes
As if fastened hands couldn't let go themselves
As if fastened hearts couldn't let go

MUCC - リブラ (Libra)

This is considered to be their best PV. I've only seen a few so far, but this one is definitely good and adds a new layer of depth to the song.

Video: here

Lyrics (translated):
With your dominant arm, you grab the reality
With your other arm, you uphold the morality
You light up the love deep in your heart
You weigh things up with the scales inside your head
Inside the dense and thick darkness you hide your own shadow
The sound of the dirty abacus echoes in the world--please stop!

In this world where feelings are only a hindrance,
shoot and kill me!
Who is using the scale?
Who is using the abacus?
Who is playing the Humelin flute?
Who is the boy that cried wolf?
Rather than caring about these things right now, I love you!

Flower, now in full bloom, already late in telling me
The meaning of living right here, right now
The meaning of tomorrow's coming

With your dominant arm, you have desire
With your other arm you hide immorality
If you could shut love deep away in your heart
The saint in your head will laugh
The brave flower that grows in the vacant lot,
Surrounded by the tower buildings that take away the sunlight's rays
People eyes are glared by these buildings
Soon, the flower stopped breathing
The wind was only gently caressing,
Only wind was gently caressing

The thing about living, that is like wandering in the darkness, not able to see a thing,
the thing about dying, that is also darkness, "the end" is no way "the beginning"
That's why we need to light up the darkness now
Burn up our life in a flash after realizing our radiance
The proof of life is hard to reach, but strong

Flower, now in full bloom, you had told me
the meaning of living right here, right now,
the meaning of tomorrow's coming
I am going to die someday
What can I do for you?
Rays of light shine eternally from the rising sun onto this world.

MUCC - ファズ (FUZZ)

Video: here

Lyrics (translated):
Listening to you sing quietly to yourself I was overwhelmed with love
And held your hand while we waited on the subway platform
Why don't you sing that song for me once more
My sweet and happy songbird

This day will turn into tomorrow
So why don't we keep it as a memory
We've only just parted but i already miss you
This time I've fallen deep
You are not with me now

Is it the seasons that change?
Or is it our hearts?

Tokyo, Coin toss, Dive
Before my heart works out which one is the answer
Tokyo, Coin toss, Dive
Sweetie, let me hold you

There will come a day when it's as clear as the sky
Water turns to cloud, sky turns to wind, and I turn to thoughts of you
I'm so humane, it's pitiful, and so selfish too
And then

I fall in love so much I lose all self-control, and it's goodbye
This planet revolves on encounters and separations
An unexpected reunion would be a joy
The heartbeat that was wrung out

Tokyo, Coin toss, Dive
It was you who knocked on the rusted doors of my heart, wasn't it?
Tokyo, Coin toss, Dive
Sweetie, come to me and dive on in

We've fallen in love

There are many more great MUCC songs, but this is a good beginner's sampling of the must-see and must-hear.

Also, Japanese lyrics are so beautifully poetic ... sure puts American music to shame. >__> (Though not all, of course.)

UO

I got into underOATH when I was a sophomore in high school. I can relate myself to majority of their songs from their albums "The Changing of Times", "They're Only Chasing Safety", and "Define the Great Line" from personal experiences. This is one of the songs that grasps me the most.

underOATH - Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape

Starfucker - Isabella of Castille

I first learned about Starfucker during hmm... early sophomore year in college I believe, which was when my interest in music really peaked. A friend of mine who was a DJ for KUCI (not sure if he still hosts) suggested me a few indie bands like Rilo Kiley (can't recall the others at the moment) and Starfucker.

Ever since I heard Starfucker I began looking up more indie bands on YouTube and imeem a lot.

I haven't listened to them for a while now (since, perhaps, winter quarter), but I happened to hear one of their songs today while exploring Pandora. My favorite songs by them are "German Love", "Pop Song", and "Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second".

But now "Isabella of Castille", which I never paid much attention to before, has definitely made the list.

The Higher August 20 at Chain Reaction

I'm definitely going to be there. The Higher is probably one of my top 5 favorite bands, and was the first band (besides Meg & Dia) to get me into indie music. I want to go and support them and buy their new album, which sounds awesome (scroll down for the Chain Reaction article). They'll be playing with Sky Harbor, The Break Up, Revenge on the Rocks, and Still Phantoms. Who's down for that? =)

Weapons Wired (my favorite song from The Higher).

If Justin Timberlake were a band, he'd be The Higher.

However, just because The Higher can bust out pop tunes, it doesn't mean that's what defines them. Their first two albums, Histrionics (2005) and On Fire (2007), branded the band's trademark sound of R&B and pure rock. "We fuse the rock and R&B that we know, and put it into our own words," founding member and bassist Jason "Face" Centeno says, citing Michael Jackson, The Dream, Al Green, Jimmy Eat World, and Maroon 5 as influences.

Now seven years since they first formed, and after some shuffling of band members, the Las Vegas-based band is back with their most radio-friendly album to date, It's Only Natural, out on Epitaph Records on June 23, 2009.

"We wrote the best songs that The Higher has ever written on this record. No matter what kind of music you listen to, you're going to find at least two songs that are your favorite," founding member and lead singer Seth Trotter says. "We have two songs the girls are going to love, two rock songs the guys who loved our old sound want, two R&B songs for those who liked our stuff like 'Insurance," two slow jams that people have been begging us to do for a long time, and two straight-up pop songs. It's like Noah's Ark on this record — there's two of everything!"

Not only is there something for everyone on this album, It's Only Natural also marks the band's first concept album, telling the story of what's been going on in The Higher's life. "It was written in the order it appears on the CD, starting with The Higher picking up the pieces of not having all the original members and going through betrayal, separation, and new beginnings, while also making the band thing happen, and moving forward," Trotter explains.

The album kicks off with two pop-rock tunes that reflect the sound early Higher fans know best with "Try Again" about separation, putting their best foot forward, and not dwelling on the past, and "Other Options" in which the band examines what they need to do in order to move forward. Those lead into the two most pop-friendly tracks, "Undertaker" about the band's roots and love for Las Vegas and the title track, "It's Only Natural," which addresses attraction and other 'natural' desires.

Next come the two most heart-wrenching tunes, the rock-based "Story of a Man Obsessed" about paranoia and obsession, and then the slow jam "The (Runaway) Artist," which Seth wrote on piano at the age 15, and adapted into a band tune, written from the point of view of a girl leaving town to follow her dreams.

"The first half of the record is about us realizing that things are falling apart," Trotter explains. "Then it goes on to make us realize we're going to be okay by ourselves."

The second half kicks off with the standout track, "Play with Fire," which Trotter calls their Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana" of the album. The essence of the lyrics are about overconfident girls whose beauty is only matched by their unoriginality. Next up is their New Found Glory-style "Burn and Turn" about the coming and going of people and their vices, while not getting lost in the shuffle.

The song titles then hit a darker turn with the jazzy slow jam "The Black Dress" about picking a girl up at a funeral and mourning the loss in the only way that feels natural, and "Beautiful Coffins" is about the sad departure of an old friend and allowing them to dig their own grave. The album closes with a two-in-one track starting with "Scandalous" about a girl who's simply no good, and leading into "The Long Con" based off of an episode of the band's favorite show, Lost, in which two characters mutually screw each other over.

And to cap off the album, the band ends with a cover of Ne-Yo's R&B hit, "Closer." "Our band listens to a lot of R&B," Trotter says. "People who like rock may never listen to Ne-Yo, but the song is so undeniable that they might give our version a chance. Plus we like to mess around with covers and mix them up."

The Higher may not be the same band that they were on their last two albums, but they aren't ashamed to tell the story. "The album starts with the most natural way our band could have formed, to who we are now," Trotter says. Centeno adds, "This is our natural progression."

It's Only Natural that the band tells their story through the album. It's Only Natural that their music reflects their diverse mix of styles. It's Only Natural that the band is who they are today.

Once - Falling Slowly

It's from a movie called Once (wiki). Pretty legit song.

This past weekend I went to San Diego. So much reflecting on the car ride there and the car ride home. My cousins playlist only had Red Hot Chili Peppers and Incubus playing. This song was stuck in my head.

She & Him - Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?

So I tagged this in accordance to what She & Him's MySpace says, but this song hella reminds me of The Pipettes. I dig the vocal harmonies towards the end; totally sample-able. She & Him consists of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel. Zooey has starred in such movies as Elf, (500) Days of Summer, and a few others I can't remember. She's currently engaged to Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie, and on an even greater side note, she's gluten-intolerant, vegan, and soy-free (how the hell do you satisfy a girl like that? 10,000 scene points to Gibbard). Also, M. Ward is working on a project with Conor and Mike from Bright Eyes called Monsters of Folk. Monsters of Folk? Damn, that's a hella big name to live up to.

Anyways, I hella dig this song.

Neil Young - Old Man

My dad used to play this song in the car all the time. One of my favorite songs by Neil Young, made in 1971. Lyrics after the cut (a very poetic song, I might add). A perfect example of the fact that sometimes, making a really good song only requires a guitar and a guitarist.

From Wikipedia:
The song was written for the caretaker of the northern-California Broken Arrow Ranch, which Young purchased for $350,000 in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the young man has, to some extent, the same needs of the old one.

Neil Young - Old Man

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Kanye

One of Kanye West's old songs back when I was still in 8th grade.

Kanye West - Through The Wire

Ne-Yo - Closer

I'm sure a lot of people know this song, but I didn't hear it until recently. Just like a previous song, I somehow found it on my itouch unexpectedly and really ended up liking it. I haven't been into the hip-hop/R&B scene for a couple of years, but Ne-Yo's stuff kind of reminds me of the Usher I used to like. Enjoy.

Seals & Crofts - Summer Breeze

I've been meaning to post this song for a while... "Summer Breeze" (1972) by Seals & Crofts! A beautiful song with beautiful lyrics. I love listening to 70s folk music (my dad got me into it. I was practically raised with it). I'll be posting more 70s folk in the near future.

Seals & Crofts - Summer Breeze

Also, Jason Mraz apparently made a cover of this wonderful song... [Expand the post to see covers of this song.]

Jason Mraz - Summer Breeze

I just don't think he did the song justice though. It's a hard song to top, in my opinion. I know The Isley Brothers had their own version (made in 1974), though, which was pretty popular. A bit more sensual:

The Isley Brothers - Summer Breeze

See the curtains hangin' in the window, in the evenin' on a Friday night.
A little light a-shinin' through the window, lets me know everything is alright.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

See the paper layin' in the sidewalk, a little music from the house next door.
So I walked on up to the doorstep, through the screen and across the floor.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

Sweet days of summer, the jasmine's in bloom. July is dressed up and playing her tune.
And I come home from a hard day's work, and you're waiting there, not a care in the world.
See the smile a-waitin' in the kitchen, food cookin' and the plates for two.
See the arms that reach out to hold me, in the evening when the day is through.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

Edit: By the way, I snagged their newest CD today. I like it.

Persona 3

I've been playing this game Persona 3 for the PS2.

This is one of my favorite songs in the video game soundtrack.

J-pop

I've been listening to j-pop lately. Utada Hikaru is one of my favorite j-pop singers. I first heard her when she sang "Simple and Clean" for the game Kingdom Hearts. After that I looked her up and listened to all of her other songs and they're just amazing. Other songs I like from her are "Traveling", "Beautiful World", and "Flavor of Life".

Utada Hikaru - Keep Trying

Got 25 Minutes to Kill?

I was having a conversation with my friend. Well, less of a conversation, more that he was watching live videos of Coheed & Cambria. They are definitely worth watch.

This song is in 3 parts. Parts 2 and 3 are after the cut.

Highlights:
Talk Box v. Teeth Guitar Solo
Thermin Solo with Hair
Epic Length Drum Solo

Rachmaninov/ Perlman -- Vocalise

A haunting piece by one of the best violinists today.

The Nails - 88 Lines about 44 Women

I like this song, haha. I heard it yesterday on the radio I believe. Looked it up just now. Go 80s!
