Before emo was singing about black parades and such, it was really known to be born from the ashes of punk rock, characterized by raw vocals and sparse production. It's rare you'll find a band like that nowadays. Okay not really. But I am very sure that Texas is the Reason is definitely one of my favorite old school emo bands. I first found out about them from a friend who use to Kazaa the shit out of her computer. Actually, I remember her showing me Dashboard Confessional for the first time when his first album (Swiss Army Romance) was "leaked." I'm not saying I heard about them first, but hearing the leaked version of Swiss Army Romance is probably as OG as seeing Adam [of the book of Genesis] as a fetus.
